here are some of the tips for study for 3rd year :
Pharma:
Books: - Lippincott
- Cheema
- Shameem
- Kaplan USMLE (If you believe me...)
- Big Katzung (if u have a lot of time for study and wanna study pharma in vast detail)
- Katzung review is of no use.....dont ever use it....
Units: General- Kaplan(definitely), Cheema n Lippincott (dont use katzung)
ANS- Kaplan(definitely), Cheema, Lippincott (if u find time)
CVS- Lippincott or Katzung
CNS- Lippincott or Katzung + Kaplan
Blood- Lippincott
Autacoids- Cheema
GIT- Lippincott
Resp- Shameem, Lippincott, Cheema(if u get time)
Kidney- Lippincott or Cheema
Chemo- Better if u go for Katzung, if u cant then Lippincott + Kaplan
NSAIDs- Lippincott
it is only and only codes.......thats what i have learnt in my one year of Pharma....my only one test was pass in whole year....attendance was also short...so i was expecting to have the worst internal assessment....i did not know much about pharma in sendups but i got about 70% in viva and more than 60% in written with one question unattempted.....wanna know how....
here are some of the useful tips:
1. Adverse Effects are all about codes....i was always a big critic of these codes way of study but believe me if u wanna pass then u have to make codes of all the drugs. Make a story of every drug with points hinting towards the Adverse Effects. u dont remember all the side effects in exam esp in viva but if u have made any codes for them then believe me u remember 90% of them that u can speak readily and viva is all about clicking the right answer agt the right time and codes make it much more easy for u. if u dont know how to make codes...u can ask me anytime...at the same time if u wanna have my codes u r most welcome but i would recommend u to make ur own codes....make sure not to make pneumonics code....they dont work...it is always useful to make codes in the form of stories...
2. Classifications: these are very very imp....dont leave them...like most of the students incuding me, do the mistake of not giving any imp to classifications of cheema and think that Lippincott is sufficient...dont ever think that....either make codes of all the classifications or just memorize them but u need to know all the classifications of cheema.... a useful tip take a some sheets and write down all the classifications of pharma on it after memorizing them.....and keep those sheets or papers with u forever....they help u a lot in revision...
3. Therapeutic Effects: once again its codes
4. Way of Study: I always have my all time favourite way of study of first of all listening to Kaplan Dvds of any chapter alongwith reading it from Kaplan Lecture Notes...it clears all your concepts in just 40-60 min in Dvd and 4-5 pages per unit and then it does not take long for u to read from any book....and then read all that has written in ur book...try to make as much codes as u can in ur first attempt....
useful tip: always write the page no with every topic (on ur book e.g lippincott)of that topic in kaplan lectures notes...it helps a lot later on....for classifications write them as much time as u can...
Patho:
Books: - Kaplan Lecture Notes n Dvds
- Robbins
- Jawad
- Javets Review
- Qaida or Micro made easy
- Parasito Qaida
1. General Pharma: U need to read both Robbins and Jawad. they ask from both of them. It is not sufficient to read any one of them but before reading any one of them do listen to a lecture of 30-45 min of Kaplan Dvds alongwith reading the 4-5 pages of that unit in Kaplan Lecture Notes. It clears all your concepts and then u can read the topic from main books much more easily! useful tip: always note down the time of video when any dia, slide or gross picture is shown in it...it helps u in quick revision later on
2. Bacteriology: u would forget all of it if u dont do comparative study of all the bacteria....take few pages and make a table and write down all the details in columns e.g antigents, antibody, lab tests etc and name of bacteria in rows and then just fill it up....keep this table with u for future revision....it helps in quick revsion.
3. Parasito: same as for bacterio....u have to do only life cycle..pathology..diagrams and lab tests...dont waste ur time in anatomy
4. Immuno: it is better if u do all of it becz it helps u a lot later on otherwise of the people recommend only 4 chapters....do have a look on Kaplan Micro alongwith it....it has few very good points...
