Seminars r good way of conveying knowledge but i feel the no of students/participant actually listening and gaining out of all this is very few Reason being students r either busy in their ward or practical classes. But big advantage is that prof/doc and their respective ward come to know abt the different activities of society and offer support one way or the other

I agree.. but i think one seminar/workshop or biannually should be enough - drug campaigns, medical camp should consume more energy..

butt bhai, well now when i go back, i would ask kj to arrange videos for us from ptv and atv and then we can put those videos on tvs installed by us in hospital. and as far as cleanliness week and plantation day is concerned, we would do it in august, as soon as possible. but i want the cleanliness week to take place after we have donated the vacuum cleaner to the hospital, that u were talking about, what do u say?

sorry for long break dosto! yes umar please have a look on ur email as i have given some suggestions about magazine and presentation. also about cleaning week and road sweeper.. i am trying to get u some thing like that donated.. lets see if there is any luck.. u can give it to hospital and put ur name on it and thats ur walking talking proof of work. also another of ur great services to improve the hospital surroundings. if successful, i think it will be one of our brainiest ideas for hospital improvement... and some thing to really cheer for i am pleased all giants are here now,, rizwan bhai, zara .. aha welcome ! welcome... zara i loved ur idea of regular donation,, i am trying to do similar things here in uk as well .... i think thats the way forward,, if we can spend a regular amount at this cause at our very own place...
i have spoken to my bank manager and he will help me with establishing a charity and bank account for that ..inshallah
i dont believe in leaving every thing to hospital managements ,, i think such small effort at out front can cause such a huge differnce..and inshallah we will...
salam
P.S.
I keep forgetting to mention that umar/asif(tanveer)! please get ur IBAN number and internation swift/routing code for money transfers... its very important... also encourage students to ask their parents to donate money to hospital like zakat(ramadan is not very far)

HI Guys.. I appreciate all the enthusiasm...but I think u guys should step back for a second and just give thought to some of the ideas that have come up over here...This is just advice based on experience coz i deal with volunteering, donations organizing on more frequent basis than most of u here and you are more than welcome to disagree but its important to keep these things in mind.. 1. First and foremost.... the goal of SPWS should not to be the "Best NGO in pakistan"... coz that has no goal direction .... u want it to be a functional and sustainable NGO... period. All of you at the end of your year and session should feel you have made a difference that can grow. NGOs that are successful are not the ones which are over enthusiastic, over ambitious.. but do simple effective projects that can keep on going... this way no one gets discouraged... 2. Keep within your budget... and list your priorities... what is going to make a difference now.. Its good to have a brainstorm on ideas and keep them on log here, flag them and come back to them later... but at a time just concentrate on 1 or 2 ( abig project and a small side one) projects... only. That should be your maximum.. you keep on budget.. you are able to do a better job and u get results. 3. When u plan a project...u have to get an estimate or calculate on on how much u would need for its completion... u cant depend on people to just donate to your cause.. if they realise that you have no idea what the costs involved are.. coz that way you will never be a financial planner and spend money as it comes. ALl the donors that i went to even in lahore.. wanted me to tell them what the costs are and then they would decide what shape and form they could help. Our estimates are just estimates.. but there should be an estimate... otherwise go back to your table and work on it.. 4. sending random emails to people.. doesnt help and I would advise you to stop it before ur emails are blacklisted by companies. As Yasir Bhai pointed out.. we get so many of those emails everyday and u delete it without thinking.. call them first,,... get an appointment to meet with them.. keep it interactive... send them an email informing about ur work... and keep it professional.. 5. you dont need a TV and video per se to teach patients... it would be great...but is it needed at present when u have other projects going on... do u have a room in which u can use the TV and video?.. how many people are you going to serve at atime for educational sessions using the one TV and video...? who is going to make the videos...?Are you going to buy them? are they going to be upto standards that are made by professional health NGOs in pakistan.... my own khala and best friend Thamindri are in NGO serving the rural population in Pakistan and Sri lanka respectively... and the videos are a bit of work... but what works even better for them.. is just have a small room a table.. some chairs or a rug for people to sit on... and a person who is knowledgable about the topic and speak on it and answer the patients questions. Thats what you should start off with instead of waiting around for a tv,.... u can invite staff to attend the sessions... like Dr Rehman..endocrinolgist in east ward.. when he did seminar in diabetes... he only had a big auitorium and patients and he thought them about diabetes... so just have a smaller sessions... make them more interactive,,, ...keep them on a regular basis.... once a week..where each one of u reads on a topic, prepares a small presentation and presents it to the patients. Ask your professors and other students to come to present.. not to listen.. but to present. It can be made an academic assignment if presented in the right way.. as what we do over here . 6. water coolers, air coolers, queing- make sure that u just dont buy and keep it there .. who is going to maintain it..keep it clean.. whose responsibility is that..? do u have a plan for that.? can that be taken care of by maybe just having a simple non-electric water cooler container with ice and water in it... that one of u can be assigned to clean and fill up everyday.. less money...more efficient.... and it can be in the society's office... will u provide glasses..?.. for all patients...to prevent infection to be spread or do they have to bring their own... coz there are no water coolers in open areas in our hospital here for the same reason just in the wards with separate plastic glasses for everyone... that infections can get transmitted.. so have u thought how u are going to prevent that? what is done over here is that a medical student volunteer fills up plastic glasses with water and ice in hot weather and goes in wards and outpatient with the trolley and offers it to everyone... at certain times of the day and keeps that trolley around.. i realise that the lahore opd is more open.. but u guys can think of something else along the lines... I can make a lot more suggestions.. but for now this is enough...and just to add that i practise what i preach... i just organized for the third year going for our international medical graduates that come new to the country from all over the world .. an information session on how to give their exams... a session which private companies charge 250 dollars per session whioch some of the people cant afford here as some of them have left their countries in desperate situations eg poverty, war..etc... and the NGO i work for charges nothing... and i got better feedback tham the private companies and the attendence grows every year... and all i have is a room, chairs, paper handouts.... and only this year have we got a small donation to get standardised patients to help out with practise sessions.. a role that i was doing for a long time... so be simple and be effective...

hmmmm zara. thanks for all the words and effort. i think there are few points to be cleared ... i think if we discourage them now.. then we are discouraging a thought process, which like murdering brains... I would agree with you that sending such letters is not wisest idea and i am sure that without backup, there is no point and no body will be interested, as they say that there are not free lunches in world. y should they do that on such email? there is need for more planning in that... about i would differ from u on rest of points... I am sitting almost the same place as u are .. i.e outside office and outside pakistan... as helpers we dont sthingyfeed idea and neither we reject any idea by them.. we had our time and thats over,,, my job is not to criticise it neither reject or discourage young people. my job is to help them where they think it is required. its important for their growth as well as adults and resposible citizens .. yes i want to teach them in class but they got to go into field and learn things for themselves.... yes society aim is not to be the best in the pak or world but how does that translate into amount of effort is very subjective. the best mean what ? giving medicine? giving education? providing meals and transport in hospital? hmmm i am not clear... I do agree with your points about assessments and things. but i dont suppose that cabinet is doing that with random ''TAAMAK TOYIAN'' . one would imagine that in due course, number of fans will be decided. a expense sheet will be made and balance will be checked. Idea will either be accepted or rejected. but again let me insist let them do all this. i just cant undersestimate their potential. hmm water coolers!!! i dont think spws will be best just by providing cold water in oven heated hospital building of opd in lahore city here temp in shades goes to 50 celcius... I do follow ur idea of students carrying water but u and me are talking about a country where hottest summar temp is 32 celcius... i think i do realised the temp difference and its possible effect on body and need to replenish .. yes we can debate that whether we should do that or not under SPWS logo... but if we do decide to go ahead... i will support electric water coolers.. personally i dont see major benefit in bringing nonelectric watercooler...u just cant beat the population load and heat with 10 litre water tank. and who will carry it? i am not sure but i think cheapest options is not my priorty otherwise one can debate that y not old fashioned '' MATTI KA GHARA'' no need for even ice... and honestly non electric water tanks will prove more constly in terms of cost of ice and who will carry it so many times a day.... where will u keep coolers overnight... u see how easy it is for any body to object over a plan and but its hell of a work to improve that... so i dont have any other way apart from trusting umar, asmaa, furqan, ayyaz that they will give it proper go... i feel our job is to create facilities... water coolers wil have its own fixed water system for supply and severage ... so there is not need for daily filling and there is hardly any maintenace,, if there is any thing wrong in few month then i hope that will covered in warranty... question is that who will do it.. i think if asmaa can think of this idea to begin with then she will definitely spot when this thing is not working... wouldnt she? patient education... i think idea is clearly presented in earlier messges.. .. no! we are not doing class room and indoor session. I would expect TV to be out side ... for general population..they can be specially mounted on revolving wall stand to come into office and they will give advice on queue making, inhaler use, antismoking etc... i dont underestimate the value of information ... yes video quality will be standard,,,, possible sources r on msgs as well... and that could be even from PTV.. and even i dont see any harm in furqan holding a camera and ayyaz expalining proper inhaler or spacer technique,,, i honestly dont think any thing wrong with that.. but again its cabinet and board decision.. its still just a proposal but i think we need to let gul nawaz (MY IMAGINARY PATIENT) that ''LOOK I AM GIVING YOU 400 RS INHALER.. IF U DONT USE IT PROPERLY OR YOU SMOKE, OR U KEEP USING UR RICKSHAW WITH ENORMOUS CARBON EMSSIONS, OR U DONT DO SOMETHING TO REDUCE DUST IN ENVRIONMENT... if i dont tell him this thing will never cross his minds and he will never understand that y he was using one inhaler a month and now he is using 4 in same time and still feeling bad sorry mail is long but bottom line is that please dont criticise them as mumtaz hasan used to criticise me and you ... let them grow.. let them work.. they might do some thing wrong but they 'are doing' something at least...

Nadeem bhai.. my point was not to criticize at all....i dont have that right.. and i am sorry if it seemed that way.. but just to guide and clarify... its better to be clarified than be put down by people out of the society or in my case.. by someone in the society.... and i learnt it the hard way and I didnt have a senior SPWS member to back me up or make me ready for that confrontation.... and i dont want the juniors to go through that again...rest i am not there... its their society and their decisions....and its their chance to learn and make the society flourish.. which i am sure they will Inshallah... Rest i apologise if i offended anyone...

thanks zara baji and nadeem bhai for your so active participation! i am really happy to see you people always with us, either supporting our ideas or improving them with your suggestions! all of us are on vacations these days but still the spws is active, discussing a lot of matters on this forum that cant be discussed even in 20 meetings, hats off to all of you and this forum providing us such a great platform where all of us can express our views and opinions anytime![/u] and this was the main aim of making this discussion forum. as far as fans and coolers project is concerned, well today is 29th and we started discussing on it a week before, now we have vacations and they would be over on 15 july and we cant do any ground work before that as all of us are back home but the reason for starting this topic so early was that we can discuss its problems and finalise about it, so that atleast we should be clear in mind about we are doing and why, when, how and where we are doing! obviously at the end of the day, it would be the cabinet to decide whether we would go for this project or not but we give a great weightage to your suggestions! what do u people say? whether we should go for this fans, air coolers and water coolers project or not?

zara u dont need to apologise to anybody... u are one of the most spirited people i have ever known... u are able as well as sincere... whatever we discuss here is to reach some finishing touch to plans happening,,, freasibilty and ground work ?,, and i just believe that cabinet should do all that... i dont mind them having hard lessons as well ,, its better to have a mildly hard lesson as a student than having in later life... (u see even now how mean i am?) i am sure that these people will not hard lessons as they are among few people in the country who are doing something for OTHERS and not THEMSELVES...and its huge thing. Let me say that i feel honoured to be part of this team... (yeh kaam thora senti nahin ho gaya ?) aray haan by the way zara, did i tell u that i passed my canadian exam and they accepted me for short elective rotation in uni of toronto before a fellowship. thanks for ur help
